It was a Sunday night quite unlike any other, September, 27th, 2015…The Harvest Moon was not only full, but it was a SUPER Moon doing a dance with earth known as a full Lunar Eclipse.

If you’re a moon-geek like myself, then naturally you had a hot date with the moon to check out this rare spectacle. But this Sunday, the usual moon-geeks, photographers and astronomers were joined by hoards of people out for this spectacle in the moonlight.

From Island View Beach to Clover Point, Esquimalt Lagoon to backyard decks across Vancouver Island — people gathered on the clear moon-shiny night. So instead of watching Big Brother, X-Factor and hours of Netflix…people were outside watching the sky. Just like the olden days. (Except they PVR’d their shows and watched them later while warming up after a crisp night out with the moon)

The supermoon rose for us while it was in full eclipse, appearing in the sky a very dark red colour, even hard to detect above the horizon at first. The real show was when the shadow of the earth retreated and you could see the eclipse on the way out. Wow. Wish it was a Super Blood Moon Eclipse every weekend. But alas, this kind of lunar action will not be visible to us again until 2033.

So — thanks Supermoon Blood Moon Eclipse, that was cool — See ya when my house is finally paid off.

Goodnight Moon.
