His name is Canuck the Crow and I’m pretty sure he’s up to something…

That seems to be the case in Vancouver this week, with police officers investigating an incident — and having to chase down a pesky crow who grabbed what appears to be a knife at the crime scene. According to this news story, police chased the bird 15-20 feet before it dropped the evidence.

There are so many puns about a “murder of one” that I have to stop myself. Now, there’s nothing funny about murder of course — but there’s something funny about this bird.

If you haven’t heard about him, Canuck the Crow was rescued by a human when he was a baby and has since become a celebrity on the westcoast. Sometimes his behavior is less than desirable, as in the example of “attacking” a guy on his bike, or grabbing a piece of evidence…but all in in all, we enjoy his antics from riding on the skytrain and just being plain friendly with us featherless folk.

Had a chat with Shawn Bergman, who is…uh Canuck the Crow’s human friend. Here’s our interview:

Mel Z: That’s got to be sweet. Did you name him?

Canuck and I: I did name him. Originally he was just known as the crow but as his popularity grew I had to figure out a name for him and I wanted it to be something Ultra Canadian that all Canadians could get behind

I’m proud of my country

Mel Z: Well it’s a great name for a Vancouver celebrity

Do you feed him or does he take care of himself in that variety like most city crows?

Canuck and I: He takes care of himself. But does get a lot of food from other people.

Mel Z: You always hear that crows are really smart — what sort of things does Canuck do that blows you away?

Canuck and I: He actually tries to figure out different ways of getting in my door as I go inside

he’s tried 5 different methods

I never let him in my house though

but he does try

the most recent method he tried he almost got in.

It’s amazing to watch his brain work

Mel Z: Hahah. He’s persistent hey!?

Canuck and I: Very! Lol

Canuck and I: I was more surprised that something like that happened in this area. Canuck being involved was no surprise though. If it’s something exciting going on in the neighborhood and he’s around he will come down and investigate

This area is his home base area.

Mel Z: Oh I see. Maybe they need to hire him with the Vancouver police force? Think he’d make a good detective?

Canuck and I: I think he’d cause more Havoc than help with the VPD. He’d steal all the evidence. Lol

Mel Z: Haha. So the police should probably keep an eye on him, hey? I’m sure they will now.

Canuck and I: I’m sure they’re definitely more aware now.

Mel Z: So Shawn, does Canuck hang out with birds too, or just people?

Mel Z: That’s cool that he is still connected with his roots. It seems that crows are a tough crowd, so he’s doing quite well balancing his two lives lol

Mel Z: That would be cool! Well, it’s clear you have Canuck’s best interests in mind — very sweet story! Thanks for chatting with me today!

Canuck and I: There will be a gallery show coming up at ROAM Gallery in Vancouver though. Where Vancouver artists and artists from around the world have been challenged to come up with their interpretation of Canuck for a show where the paintings and art will be sold.
