Zach Sobiech passed away on Monday, May 20 at the age of 18 — but his inspirational message will live on through song. The Minnesota native learned last June that he only had months to live after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 14, and decided to record the song “Clouds” as a farewell message to his family and friends.

People who have lived in Tofino know all about Tacofino, it’s been very popular with the locals and the surfing community. They were so in demand they decided to expand into Vancouver and now Victoria. Their menu is varied and they do offer everything from the Pork and Vegetarian Buritos to Tortilla Soup and their most popular dish, the fish taco. That is made of crispy ling cod, cabbage, chipotle mayo and salsa fresco. Tacofino is usually set up at Save On Foods Memorial Centre, in the back parking lot weekdays from 1-3pm and they roam on the weekends. You can’t miss their one of a kind truck that features Island artist Lee Robinsong’s painting of the Virgin de Guadalupe holding a taco.

The best place to watch the start of the race is Clover Point Saturday morning at 9am. They are serving up the flapjacks at 8:00am so be there early. We admit, the boats are floating around at a imaginary start line but there is method to the madness. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, experienced past racers will do the play by play for you. The boats for the longer races will take until at least Saturday night to start coming in.

Even if you aren’t involved in the racing, you’re up for a good party right? Most of the action will happen in the inner harbour where you’ll be able to get a good look at the boats and enjoy a beverage or six. You can hop abaord the HMCS Oriole Friday from 1-3:30pm and have a look around. Then it’s off to Ship Point where they’ve set up Swiftsure Centre. Starting at 2pm Friday the bar is open and Mid Life Crisis hits the stage from 8-11pm. Stuff happening downtown all weekend long. Oh, and say hi to Captain Jack Sparrow for us!

The event will feature many organizations in our community, such as, volunteering opportunities, charities, businesses and local environmental clubs. There will be ongoing presentations throughout the day and all schools and community members are welcome.

This will be a valuable opportunity for students, as it will depict the importance of being active in our community. It will educate young adults about the importance of giving back to our community and promote participation among the older generations. Many are involved in school activities throughout high school but find it difficult to pursue these after graduation. This fair will provide involvement opportunities to graduating students and alumni. It would also provide local businesses with the opportunity to promote themselves, along with raising awareness of local environmental and volunteer groups.
