By now you’ve seen and heard quite a few people talking about and taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It’s the social media fundraising challenge where the recipient literally pours a bucket of ice water over their head. What a great idea! ALS needs more awareness and support…and frankly this has been a long hot summer. Everyone’s done it…Ok, well — not everyone — but Bon Jovi, Weird Al, Serena Ryder, Chris Pratt…a lot of people are having a blast with this.
Ocean 98.5′s very own “good sport” Rob Michaels has accepted his challenge and here’s what it looks like:
There we go! Jann Arden, Gordie Tupper, Sunny Lenarduzzi, Ian Slipp — you’re up to bat!
When is the last time you’ve seen a sea otter around Victoria? Hmmm? I’ve seen them near the beach in East Sooke Park some time ago…but it looks like the furry little guys are making a comeback to the waters around Victoria.
Mmmm…Sweet summer. Much of the summer sweetness, I think we could agree — is courtesy of the simplicity of wearing flip-flops and tank tops and having a bowl of delicious fresh fruit at your fingertips at all times.
Here are some of the great local farms where you can put in an hour or two of picking and walk away grinning with the a bucket or two of the delicacies of fresh, local and sometimes organic fruits and veggies.
Ocean 98.5 is thrilled for the 3rd Annual Victoria International Chalk Art Festival taking place from September 10th – 14th. Come and join in the excitement of Canada’s largest international chalk art festival!
The weather was…perfect…Perfectly hot. We waited until Sunday when a light, wispy cloud cover provided some breaks to the 30 degree temps. It was stil hot. But no worries…there’s a mister that’ll help your. No, not that guy with the Super-soaker — but he’ll do the trick. There’s a great wall of light mist that you can casually walk up to and it’ll cool you off for a few minutes. Then you can come back, or hit the water fill-up station.
The music festival is a colourful event, to say the least. From the hats and t-shirts that have been sitting top shelf of the closet, waiting for The Music Festival, to beach-ballls, Super-soakers, pink cowboy hats and of course — the bands. They’re the most colourful expression in my books. Pouring their talents out on the stage for the crowds of 10,000 to grab a glass-full. Sunday’s evening line-up included Kongos, Loverboy (Wallflowers — cancelled), Mother Mother and Our Lady Peace.
I’d like to introduce to you to a local performer that’s been busking on the streets of Victoria, making videos, singing and dancing on YouTube and at benefits and parties around Victoria for a few years — despite the fact that he’s just 16-years old.
His name is Tristan Thompson and he’s having a blast making a go of it in the music biz these days…There’s an album called Here For You, performances, a YouTube channel — while he’s still just a kid like any other in Victoria that found something he really likes to do.
Summer! Yes! It’s finally here! We’ve been wishing it would be here for…well since September, really. In my house, our #1 favourite summer activity is swimming! Lakes, rivers, ocean, outdoor pools…wherever we can find a watering-hole. It’s not summer until we’re leaping into a fresh body of water.
While you can enjoy beaches all over the island and Greater Victoria, once in a while there’s a spike in some nasty bug in the water — that’ll provoke a warning from VIHA and the CRD. Right now, there are warnings for Beaver Lake and a section of Cordova Bay Beach, so don’t be dipping in there until it’s clear.
We’ve officially hit the sweet spot in the year…Summer Solstice hits us Saturday, June 21st! It’s the first day of summer, the longest day of the year!
So why not welcome this day with a whole lot of fresh air? If you’ve got kids, you’re all too familiar with the balance between fresh air and outdoor play with the lure of those incredibly exciting video games, iPads and round the clock choices of kids programming on TV.
