Kinsol Trestle - Cowichan Valley
Kinsol Trestle – Cowichan Valley

Spring Break! Some people gone for it and hopped a plane, ferry or Ford Escape in effort to get away from the usual schedule of soccer, work, walk, groceries, rinse and repeat. And others are…Still. Here. Which is a pretty nice to be if you are embarking on a “staycation”. I mean, look around — it’s pretty amazing on Vancouver Island.

So I’m giving my husband — The Todd — credit for last weekend’s little Spring Breakation up to the Cowichan Valley…(officially noted). He is typically driven by the promise of something to eat — so the idea started with lunch.

We installed our 2 kids, some bags of chips (road food) and headed up the Malahat. So no-one gets hangry, we start with lunch. If you haven’t been to Merridale Ciderworks, it’s an orchard, restaurant and cidery that grows it’s own fruit and makes a choice of ciders along with some amazing meals infusing their bounty. Check out the faeries in their orchard and I hear there’s some leprechauns invading them for a couple of weeks leading up to St. Patricks Day

Cowichan Valley Spring Breakcation

  • Lunch at Merridale Ciderworks
  • Visit some interesting sheep
  • Tour past Shawnigan Lake
  • Count all the horses, cows, eagles and animals that you don’t see everyday
  • Google route yourself to Kinsol Trestle
  • Bring your own toilet paper and gas mask for the port-a-potty
  • Hit the trail towards the Kinsol Trestle through the wood
  • Walk the Trestle, take some photos and amaze yourself with the engineering of such an amazing structure…while telling yourself it’s very very safe. (no gaps in the bridge, thankfully)
  • Devour bags of chips like a family of swine on your way home
  • Make some burritos and load up those great photos onto your Facebook.

Here’s the slideshow if you’d like a preview:

Oh, this trip is a good one to bring bikes on too! Happy Spring Break! Where have your adventures headed?
