goodlife-marathonIt’s a big weekend for turkey lovers and an even bigger weekend for the 10,000 participants in the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon.

The races begin at various times throughout the morning this Sunday, October 9th with the start and finish in front of the BC Legislative Buildings. The majority of runners will finish by 2:15 pm.

Join Ocean 98.5 at our Marathon Cheering Station near Ogden Point to cheer on your friends and family that are doing the marathon, but there’s some road closures to be aware of in the following areas: Downtown, James Bay, Cook Street Village, Beacon Hill Park, Fairfield, Oak Bay and Uplands.

Road Closures

  • Belleville Street between Menzies and Government (in front of the Legislature Buildings) will be closed from noon on Saturday, October 8 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 9.
  • On Sunday, October 9, no traffic will be permitted on Dallas Road between 7:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. The portion of Dallas Road between Cook and Douglas will be closed starting at 4 a.m. and will remain closed until the end of the event. Most other closures are temporary, allowing residents to have full or at least intermittent access and egress.
  • Residents of James Bay have permanent access and egress via Douglas Street but should be aware of the crossing route at Johnson, Cook, Fairfield, etc.
  • The route includes Dallas Road from James Bay to Gonzales Beach, Beacon Hill Park roadways and some small residential roadways will be closed for various periods of time on Event Day. There will be a loop in the Lawndale / Cowichan area that will be encircled at the turnaround for the Half Marathon.

Vehicles will not be allowed on the course but marshals and police will be allowing traffic to cross the roads throughout the event.

Intermittent Access Across Race Route (Police Patrolled) at:

  • Douglas at Johnson
  • Yates at Cook; Fort at Cook; Fairfield at Cook
  • Chandler at Richmond
  • Foul Bay at Richardson/McNeill

James Bay: To exit James Bay, take Simcoe to Douglas and head North out of downtown. Intermittent closures will be at Johnson (from Wharf to Cook) from 7:35 – 8:15 a.m. and 8:50 – 9:10 a.m.

Thrifty Foods Kids Run: The Kids Run route will use Menzies (from Kingston to Superior) and Superior (from Menzies to Montreal); these roads will be closed to traffic and parking from 10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Montreal Street (from Superior to Kingston) and Kingston (from Montreal to Menzies) will be closed from 10:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Parking

Race participants should park in the downtown area prior to 7 a.m. and walk the short distance to the start. There will be limited access to the downtown core as the 8K Road Race starts at 7:15 a.m. and the Half Marathon starts at 7:30 a.m.

Parking is free on Sundays at City parkades and on-street meters. Learn more about parking downtown.
