For Immediate Release

VICTORIA, BC — In order to complete improvements for the North Park and Fernwood neighbourhoods along Cook Street, a street closure and detours will be in effect this Sunday between approximately 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. The City is reaching out to local businesses and residents along Cook Street between Caledonia Avenue and Pandora Avenue to notify them and work to minimize impacts during the closure.

Traffic control staff and signage will be located on both sides of the construction area along Cook Street to assist drivers and other road users during the closure. The intersection of Cook and Caledonia will be closed for paving; however the intersection of Cook and Pandora will remain open to traffic. Information boards are being placed throughout the affected areas in advance this week to notify the public and reroute vehicle drivers and cyclists as needed. Emergency services and BC Transit has also been notified.

Pedestrians will be accommodated during the final paving on Sunday and are advised to use caution and pay attention to traffic control staff while on sidewalks within the construction zone. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes and some noise around the construction area should also be expected during the 14 hour period.

The maintenance and upgrades being completed along Cook Street have taken place over the past several months as part of various improvements that will benefit the North Park and Fernwood neighbourhoods, including:

  • A new crosswalk: A new crosswalk at Cook Street and North Park Street was identified as a priority for the communities and will allow for improved pedestrian access in North Park Village
  • New entranceway features: Banner poles at Cook and Caledonia will be installed later this summer and will signify the entry to North Park Village
  • Improved asphalt surface: A new roadway surface will improve travel for vehicles and cyclists along Cook Street by removing portions of the existing roadway surface and replacing it with new asphalt
  • Improved pedestrian mobility: Sidewalk and driveway access improvements along sections of Cook Street
  • Curb and gutter repairs: Curb and gutters were upgraded where needed to improve drainage

  • 30 —
